Rome Conquers in Threes: 3 Territories, 3 Horns and 3 Walls.
Three areas were conquered by Pagan Rome before it could rule supremely.
Three nations were rooted up for Papal Rome before it could rule supremely.
Three "walls" must be overcome for Modern Rome to rule the world supremely.
Pagan Rome Conquers the World:
In describing the conquest of the European world by PAGAN Rome, Daniel identified three territories which were to be subdued by PAGAN Rome as it brought the world under its dominion.
Dan. 8:9 "And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the SOUTH, toward the EAST, and toward the PLEASANT LAND."
They were (East) Syria 65 BC; (Pleasant Land) Israel 63 BC; (South) Egypt 30 BC.
This same historical process is described in Daniel 11:1-29 as Pagan Rome becomes the King of the North.
KEY to the kings of the North and South:
Basically, the entity that holds the teachings of pagan Babylon is the King of the North, and the entity that holds the atheism of the Pharaoh of the Exodus is the King of the South.
The worship of both Babylon and Egypt are pagan sun worships, but the particular "Who is the Lord?" atheistic attitude of the Pharaoh of the Exodus is the key to identifying the "King of the South" in Bible prophecy. Whatever entity has the same atheistic attitude is the King of the South.
Alexander Hislop's book, "The Two Babylons" describes that when Babylon was conquered by the Persians its pagan priests moved to Pergamum in Asia, then when Asia was conquered by pagan Rome the priests and gods were moved to the city of Rome and added to the Pantheon there.
Prophetic events in ancient Israel's history now apply to "Spiritual Israel" the Christian Church world-wide (not just to the SDA Church either), and that to attempt to apply the prophecies to literal Palestine today is futurism....but I digress.......
The gender of the Hebrew nouns is very important in ascertaining the true meaning of Dan. 8:8.
The 4 HORNS of Alexander's empire described in Dan. 8:8 are said to be masculine, while the 4 WINDS are feminine. Therefore, when 8:9 says, "And out of one of THEM," its in the feminine, so its saying that the "little horn" comes out of one of the feminine "WINDS of heaven," NOT from one of the masculine HORNS of Alexander's generals. This masculine/feminine scenario also holds in Dan. 11:4 where the HORNS are mentioned again, thereby connecting the two chapters together at that point. Dan. 11:4 indicates that Alexander's immediate posterity (whether his son or his generals) would not continue his kingdom.
So, evidently, Pagan Rome did not come from one of Alexander's generals, even though 11:5 begins describing the contests between those generals, until verse 13. There, Pagan Rome begins coming into the picture as a political power at about 200 BC, and in 65 BC conquers Syria (and absorbs the pagan priests of Babylon) thereby becoming the new King of the North, and the history follows down to the crucifixion of Christ in 11:22.
Dan. 11:23 takes us back to 161 BC when Rome made its league with the Jews, down to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD in verse 28.
Dan. 11:24 contains the 360 year prophecy of Pagan Rome's rule, from the fall of Egypt in 31BC to 330AD when Emperor Constantine moved the capital of Rome to Constantinople and divided Rome's power. Constantine also made the first Sunday worship laws (and other laws which brought pagan Babylonian worship forms into the formerly pure New Testament Apostolic Church).
Dan. 11:29 alludes to this division of power also, signaling the decline of Pagan Rome, and the invasions of the barbarian tribes.
Papal Rome Conquers the world:
In describing the conquest of the European world by PAPAL Rome in Dan. 7:8, 20, Daniel identified three horns which were to be removed before Papal Rome brought the world under its dominion:
Dan. 7:8 "I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things."
Dan. 7:20 "....And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows."
In various places in the book, "Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation" by Uriah Smith, we read that in primarily political conquests, the half-pagan Heruli were wiped out by the Ostrogoths in 493 AD, and Pagan Rome's Emperor Justinian destroyed the Vandals in 534 AD, and also drove the Ostrogoths from Rome in 538 AD, finally completely wiping them out by 553 AD.
During this same time period (actually 533 AD), Justinian, in another primarily political move calculated to better unite his kingdom, also gave the Bishop of Rome a formal endorsement, and also during this same time period, Rome's "first son of the Church," Clovis, the king of the Franks, made wars (beginning in 496 AD through 508 AD) in order to kill off or convert all the atheistic barbarian pagans, half-pagans and other types of semi-Christians who were opposing Catholicism, and spread the Catholic brand of Christianity (basically Babylonian paganism) around Europe.
Catholicism has not forgotten this either. In 1996 Pope John Paul II went to France to celebrate the 1500th anniversary of the "conversion" of Clovis.
And so, in 538AD, Papal Rome becomes the new King of the North (the curator of pagan Babylonian sun worship), and continues for 1260 years, until the "time of the end" in Dan. 11:40, at which time the papacy is "pushed at" or given the "deadly wound" (Rev. 13:3) by the new King of the South, atheistic France, in 1798.
It is interesting to note that France set up the papacy, and later, France also took it down.
(Very unfortunately, Uriah Smith's D&R gets off-course with the "a king" vs. "the king" problem at 11:36, and subsequently crashes-and-burns in the Crimean War of the 1870's by verse 45.)
Dan. 11:30-32 briefly describes the process of Papal Rome rising to become the new King of the North.
Dan. 11:33-35 adds a description of the papal persecutions during the 1260 years.
Dan. 11:36-39 adds a description of the Babylonish worship style of the papacy.
Modern Rome Conquers the Entire World:
Dan. 11:40-45 Describes the future conquest of the Entire World by the "healed" or "resurrected" Modern Rome at the end of the world, just before Jesus returns.
Here, we again find three areas of conquest, which are subdued as the King of the North (Modern Papal Rome) finally rises to take control of the whole world.
These three areas are the former Soviet Union, the United States, and finally the entire world. These three areas have symbolic meanings associated with them.
The First Wall:
The first symbolic "wall" was the former "Iron Curtain," and its removal was represented by the destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989 --a milestone in the rapid disintegration of the atheistic USSR.
Atheism, the King of the South:
The spirit of atheism in ancient Egypt died suddenly with Pharoah in the Red Sea (temporarily anyway), but it popped up again in France, and again died suddenly in 1798, but it suddenly popped up yet again in the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, thereby making atheistic, Communist Russia the new "King of the South."
(It is interesting to note here that the "vision" of the Virgin Mary of Fatima, which predicted the eventual total demise of atheistic Russia, the new "King of the South" happened later that same year, and the late Pope John Paul II was the leading devotee of Mary of Fatima, and thousands of Catholic mystics watch for and chronicle the apparitions of "Mary" and her "prophecies" all over the world.)
The Second Wall:
"When the Papacy enters the United States through the passage of a national Sunday law, the symbolic 'wall of separation of church and state' will have to be removed. It will be accomplished by the politicians and justices of this land, as a result of the pressure brought upon them by the Protestant and Catholic voters of this country. The pressure is already mounting and can easily be verified through the testimony given within the secular presses. This second WALL of attack for the Papacy is already being threatened." Jeff Pippenger, "The Final Rise and Fall of the King of the North," 140 pgs., available from this website in downloadable PDF on page #84.
"The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet's words: "The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Revelation 12:17. The Great Controversy, p. 592
The Third Wall:
"The third WALL which the papacy will bring down in order to take control of the entire world is the symbolic "wall of national sovereignty." The structure which will be used to control the world is the United Nations. Already within the laws which have been developed by the United Nations, we find the legal principles designed to remove national sovereignty. This organization has already written and passed laws which supersede the national laws of individual countries. In fact, many of these countries --including the United States-- have already signed these agreements, placing the laws of the individual nations in subjection to the laws of the world government. In order for the papacy to command the entire world, national sovereignty must be removed." Jeff Pippenger, "The Final Rise and Fall of the King of the North" p. 37
The United Nations will eventually become the "ten kings who have no kingdom as yet" in Rev. 17.
"As we approach the last crisis, it is of vital moment that harmony and unity exist among the Lord's instrumentalities. The world is filled with storm and war and variance. Yet under one head--the papal power--the people will unite to oppose God in the person of His witnesses. This union is cemented by the great apostate. While he seeks to unite his agents in warring against the truth he will work to divide and scatter its advocates." 7T 182 (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p.182)
